Are you heading back to school and looking to make extra money? Here are some tips to ace an interview and blow your competition out of the water!
First Impressions – Dress to Impress!
It can be difficult deciding what to wear to an interview. You definitely want to look professional, and you want to fit in, but it’s also important to stand out! What to wear to an interview can vary on the position you are applying for. For example, if you are interviewing for a creative job (such as a writer or graphic designer) or a client-based corporate job (such as a public relations, sales or marketing) these two outfits would differ. One may be more formal while the other may be more business casual. The outfit truly depends on the position and company. Just remember to keep it classy and accessorize. Also, a blazer can be a great addition to any outfit – you can’t go wrong with a trendy blazer!
Grooming – Keep it Simple!
So now you’ve got an amazing outfit picked out. Next, you need to make sure your hair, make-up and nails are up to par. For women with long hair, it looks more professional when your hair is tied back into a ponytail or pulled back off of your face. This will also prevent you from constantly touching your hair during the interview. Make-up should be kept simple; less is more! A little foundation, neutral toned eye shadows in tan, brown or beige, a sweep of mascara and a pop of colour on the lips. Last but not least, make sure your nails are in great condition. The last thing your interviewer wants to see is chipped nail polish while they are shaking your hand. Make sure your nails are clean and cut, and either skip the polish completely or go for a neutral colour. Ace an interview by looking professional from head to toe!
Articulating – Think Before You Speak!
Once your appearance is in check, it’s time to think about the questions you might be asked during your interview. A few examples are:
Why are you interested in working for ______?
Describe some of your weaknesses.
What are your future goals?
What education/work experience do you have that would be beneficial to your position with _____?
It’s helpful to write a list of potential questions and answers so you are fully prepared for the interview. Do your research and have some knowledge on the company history. Be well informed and remember to think before you speak. It’s beneficial to take a minute and provide an excellent response than to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind!
After the interview – Follow Up!
After you’ve aced the interview, don’t forget to follow up! This step is one people often forget, and it is important if you want to ace an interview! This proves that you are seriously interested in the position and sends a reminder that you would be a great candidate. Don’t wait – send your thank you e-mail within 24 hours of the interview. Use your follow up email to reiterate why you would be an excellent candidate for the position, thank them for taking the time to speak with you, and mention anything you wished you had said during the interview but didn’t get a chance to. Finally, be sure to proof read your email! A typo or grammatical error could pull you out of the competition.
