Tips for Beginners. What is Takes to Become one of the Top Toronto Promotional Models!
So you think you’ve got what it takes to become one of the top Toronto promotional models? Are you already working as a promotional model and looking for ways to improve yourself or find more work? It’s a super fun, exciting job and a great way to make money, but it is important to treat this job with attention and detail. Here are some tips to succeed in the business:
1. Have a professional portfolio – When submitting your photos to an agency, it is important to have professional photos. Most agencies are looking for a head shot, 3/4 shot, and a full body shot. It is important that these photos are not “selfies” or taken on your camera phone. If you are unable to have professional photos taken, have a friend take photos of you with a digital camera against a clean background with no distractions. These photos will be seen by the agency and will then be submitted to the client for consideration. Therefore it is important that you look your best in these photos and take the time to have them look professional. If you’re unsure, ask the agency what kind of looks they’d like in your photos (e.g. cocktail dress, corporate apparel, swimsuit etc).
2. Don’t take rejection personally – Once you are hired by an agency, it might take some time before you start your first job as a promotional model. Each client is looking for a specific look to accurately represent and demonstrate their brand. From golf tournaments to liquor sampling, each activation requires a different look. It doesn’t mean you’re not pretty enough or good enough – you just may not represent their brand image. So don’t take it personally, it has nothing to do with your talent.
3. Keep your commitments – For many individuals, being a promotional model can be a second or side job. Many promotional models work while at school or alongside a full-time or part-time job. Even though you may have other commitments in your life, make sure to take your role as a promotional model seriously to ensure you receive work and are well respected. If you are accepting a booking, keep it! Last minute cancellations hurt the agency and brand you are working for. They picked you for a reason and want you to work with them! Always show up 10-15 minutes early for a shift, and if you are required to submit feedback, photos or receipts make sure you do by the deadlines requested. This will ensure you get paid on time and are credited for your work.
4. Be knowledgeable – As a promotional model, you are not just another pretty face! Yes, looks do matter, and a professional, polished look is a necessity. But as a promotional model, you won’t simply be standing around with a smile on your face. It will be your job to interact with potential consumers and be knowledgeable about the brand you are representing. Read up on your event protocol, pay attention during training, and even do a little but of research on your own about the product and/or message you are representing. Brand awareness is extremely important and the client will adore you for going the extra mile! That will also result in repeat bookings.
Overall, working as a promotional model is extremely fun and a great opportunity to meet new people and try new things.
