Stage Production for the 47th Annual Miss & Mr. CHIN Competitions

1960’s Fun in the Sun Themed Stage Production

Top event rentals agency, Tigris once again recruited contestants and coordinated two stage productions for the CHIN Picnic. This is CHIN Radio’s 47th annual event – namely their feature entertainment – the Miss CHIN Bikini International Pageant and Mr. CHIN International Competition.

Recruiting men and women with vibrant personalities, great bodies and amazing stage presence kicks off in February and runs through until late April, with preliminaries to screen and select all participants in early May. For those who attend the show(s) annual, most don’t realize how much goes into the productions behind the scenes and off-stage.

In addition to rehearsals, contestants also participate in photo shoots for an online voting component, a series of pre-promotional events including the Media Launch party, Taste of Little Italy, Radio & TV appearances, commercials, opening / closing parties for the Italian Contemporary Film Festival – all of this running from mid-May until the shows which take place Canada Day long weekend.

Contestants are scored for their stage presentation and performance (50%), interview (30%), attendance & participation with pre-promotional events (10%) and online voting open throughout June (10%). Ultimately, CHIN Radio’s goal is to secure an outgoing, well-spoken and respectable male and female ambassador to represent them at special events and charity functions throughout the year they hold their title.

This year’s contestants got to strut their stuff to a 1960’s “Fun in the Sun” Beach themed stage production. From the upbeat music to the tiki decor and neon apparel, the stage production was not only entertaining for the audience but also landed us on the front page of The Toronto Sun (and page 8) the following day.

Stage Production – and a Piece of History

Running annually in Toronto since 1966, the CHIN Picnic has become a huge multicultural celebration with more than 100,000 guests attending over the three days. While guests come out to enjoy the entertainment and the food – it’s Miss CHIN that put the festival on the map over the years. Tigris/Knew.Age have been producing the two shows for 10 consecutive years in association with Fayez1 Productions who handled music and choreography.

The CHIN picnic was started by CHIN Radio founded, Johnny Lombardi – and has since been taken over by his children, Lenny & Theresa Lombardi. As quoted in The Sun, “My dad (Johnny) started it back in 1966 as a celebration, almost as a gift back to the city for being licensed as a multicultural broadcaster and it grew from a small little gathering amongst his friends,” explained Lenny Lombardi, president of CHIN Radio International. “As more languages were added to CHIN Radio, he extended the invitation to different communities. It’s a cross-section of so many cultures and groups that come together to celebrate together through music, culture, song, dance and food. It’s something that we’re very proud of and after 47 years, it’s something that continues to work and thrive.”

Over the years, Tigris has incorporated a variety of themes including a “Rocket Through the Decades” to commemorate the 40 years of the festival in 2006, western in 2007, Grecian theme to mark the summer Olympics in 2008, World Cup in 2009, Jungle in 2010, South Beach in 2011, Hollywood in 2012 – and 1960’s “Fun in the Sun” for 2013. The stage production is enhanced by decor, props and custom-designed apparel/swimsuits.

This year’s Miss CHIN, Sabrina DiBella and Mr. CHIN, Ricky Liorti – will each get to enjoy a trip for 2 to the Caribbean along with jewelry, certificates and other prizes. Congratulations to 1st runner ups Ky Williams & Romel Griarte as well as 2nd runner ups Jennifer Willim & Eddy Bucardo who will also receive an assortment of great prizes.
